Data URIs Make CSS Sprites Obsolete

An excellent introduction to data URIs. I've been using these for a while, and they are especially useful if you want to create a page, with images, that can be distributed as a single file and will work offline. You'd be surprised how often that's needed.

Opera 10.60 for Linux Released

Finally, Opera on Linux gets the update many (including me) have been waiting for. Native rendering, the speed improvements and the standards improvements are all very welcome.

Some Small Changes
I have been dabbling with the site code and reorganised a few things. First, I've changed the homepage rather substantially - it now has more of a blog feel, listing recent posts. I've removed the separated blog page as well, as it's no longer needed.
I've moved the recommended and popular post lists to the sidebar, and added a link to the three article series. I've also moved the latest article and cheat sheet to the bottom of every page.
Next, I've added a random page feature. Because I can.
The random page thing has made it rather easy to potter about, so I've been exposed to some of my own earlier writing on the site. I'm updating (or, where appropriate, deleting) older posts as I go.
I've added the ability to subscribe to a feed for a single tag - visit the tag page to grab the feed address.
And finally, I've integrated the excellent ZooTool. Now, when I post an item there, it creates a blog post here (example). This makes sharing documents, images and webpages with you much easier and should mean I can post rather more often.
Victorian-Style Boba Fett

From Greg Peltz - a series of rather cool images of 19th century Star Wars characters. Dapper Chewy is also great.

The Tau Manifesto (Why Pi is Wrong)

A great piece of writing by Michael Hartl. Completely demolishes Pi as a mathematical constant, and a great sales job explaining why we should use Tau instead. Euler's Identity clinched it for me.

The Ultimate Website Launch Checklist
Invaluable - a comprehensive checklist to run through before launching any website. The "check all bespoke/complex functionality" item might need to be expanded on a site-by-site basis though.

ZooTool
I've been playing with ZooTool recently, and decided to give it a proper try. Here's my (underpopulated) zoo.
I've been thinking about changing the homepage here to something that updates more often, integrating tweets, thoughts, images, video, bookmarks, etc. This might be the tool I was looking for.
Astronomy Picture of the Day

One of my all-time favourite sites, and partly responsible for me starting a physics degree with the Open University. As you've probably worked out by now, it features one astronomy picture every day.

Responsive Web Design

Thinking about a iPhone version of your website? Read this first - it's a comprehensive piece explaining how to use the media attribute to control the display of your site in different width browsers (including mobile devices).
