Computer Trouble

I've been having some issues with a hard drive that seems to have packed up. The machine would start fine - no problems in post etc - but just wouldn't boot to an OS. The problem appears to be with a drive, so last night I set SpinRite to work its magic, and was presented with this when I checked the progress this morning:

Spinrite In Progress

Darn. 151 hours. What's really annoying is that I was in the process of finally sorting out a proper backup system with CrashPlan.

Update: I am informed by the wife, who is at home watching the progress of this recovery operation with interest, that the estimated time remaining has increased to 842 hours. 35 days. That's more than I'd planned on.

sounds like you'll be quicker buying a new drive, good luck on the data recovery of the current one.
you will have nephews until you recover all that data
are you sure it should take that much?
maybe you should go to a specialist in recovering data
good luck,
Evan

Just goto ebay and buy a hard drive to usb cable.

search [sata ide]

It's basically a 3 headed connector to read hard drives with usb.

The cable itself has 3 connectors:
2.5" IDE - for laptop hard drives
3.5" IDE - for standard desktop drives
sata - for serial ata hard drives

You may not be able to use the hard drive for an operating system again (if the bootsector is damaged) but at least you'll be able to recover your data.
Not a bad idea, Evan. Thanks.
